Our initiative concerns the burden of overweight and obesity and its strong social patterning in South Africa and Sweden. We strive to use complementary sources of information from surveys, cohort studies and register data linkages in South Africa and Sweden, and apply methods from life course epidemiology to investigate and address the social and developmental origins and consequences of overweight and obesity, negative body image, disordered eating and related psychological problems across the life course and across generations. The aim of the meeting is to share and expand our international research networks and to enrich our teaching and dissemination activities in public health and equity.
Keywords: Social determinants of health, health inequalities, obesity, disordered eating, non-communicable diseases
