Bruce is Full Professor of Information Science at Stellenbosch University, where is also a member of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) and Director of the Centre for Knowledge Dynamics and Decision-Making. He has served as Visiting or Adjunct Professor at various universities around the world.

Watson’s first PhD is in computing science/engineering from Eindhoven, after studying discrete mathematics and computer science in Waterloo (Canada). He later returned to Eindhoven as chair of Software Construction. Watson’s second PhD is from the University of Pretoria. Parallel to his academic career, he worked as a compiler engineer at several companies (Microsoft and Ribbit), followed by engineering and architecture work on pattern recognition for security (Cisco and Netronome), nanolithography and simulation (Brion and ASML), and several startups.

Bruce’s research includes algorithmics, formal methods, and AI – applied to areas as diverse as wine science, cyberthreat intelligence, social network analysis, and natural language processing. As a result, he has been a keynote speaker, presenter or panel organizer at various cybersecurity and cyberwarfare conference, including those specialized in AI and Quantum Computing. He has coauthored almost a hundred articles and supervised a few dozen Master’s and Doctoral students. He is South Africa’s Technical Committee 2 representative to IFIP, as well as a member of IFIP’s WG2.4 and WG1.10, and a member of the ACM, SPIE, and SAICSIT.
