The aim of our consortium MicroBioRefine is to investigate environmental and economic sustainability of biomass production by Nordic photosynthetic microorganisms (algae and cyanobacteria) grown on local flue gases and wastewaters. Our approach recycles carbon dioxide and water, but also important elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and at the same time allows the production of energy-rich biomass to be used as advanced biofuels, carbon-neutral and valuable polymers and smart biofertilizers (substituting for energy-intensive Haber-Bosch nitrogen and non-renewable phosphorus).
While commonly algae parks are placed in warm and sunny places and culture well-known collection strains, we investigate the potential of natural (North-)Swedish microalgae for wastewater reclamation and biomass production in Northern Sweden. Wastewater and industrial CO2 is produced world-wide, solutions therefore have to be found that can be applied in places with challenging climate.
